First Day of School

***UPDATE: I switched one of my classes (because it turns out there is an assignment we have to complete in Korean), so I updated my schedule below. My Psych of Personality class on Tues/Thurs is gone and I replaced it with Molecular Biology on Tues/Thurs afternoon.***

Today was a good day, considering it was my first school day. Not that exciting, but I guess now it's time to get down to business. I don't really have the best schedule, but since I live close to campus, it'll be okay. Here's what my class schedule is like:

Monday & Wednesday

9:00 - 10:15:   Biological Psychology
10:30 - 11:45:
12:00 - 12:50:
1:00 - 1:50:
2:00- 3:15:
3:30 - 4:45:   Cell Biology
5:00 - 5:50:   Korean Language
6:00 - 6:50:   Korean Language

Tuesday & Thursday

9:00 - 10:15:   Psychology of Personality
10:30 - 11:45:
12:00 - 12:50:
1:00 - 1:50:
2:00- 3:15:
3:30 - 4:45:  Molecular Biology
5:00 - 5:50:   Korean Language
6:00 - 6:50:   Korean Language

So it's not really great because  I have to get up for first period and then I have a long break until the afternoon. I plan on doing the majority of my studying during this break so hopefully that will leave me with free time in the evenings.

Today was the typically sort of "first day of course" classes, where the professor only really goes over the syllabus and then lets the class leave early. The Bio Psych professor speaks English very well and the Cell Biology prof speaks it okay; a little more slowly than the other though. My Korean Language class was a bit different because they have to interview the students to see where their level is. She said if we have zero knowledge of Korean then we can just leave class and don't have to bother with the interviews (so then 85% of the class got up and left). Some people might be bumped up to the intermediate level class if the already have some knowledge of the language. Also, since the interviews will take all week, the prof said that if we are skipping the interviews, then we don't have to come to class until next Monday! So that will be a nice way to ease myself into classes again. Tomorrow I will have the Psych of Personality so we will see how that goes.

In Cell Bio today, the prof decided to read out the names of the class just so students could clarify that they were indeed in the right class. So he's about to read the list and all he does is pause and go: "umm....ummm....um... Kay-ra...Ban-der-we-se?" Hahah! As soon as he paused I figured I was first on his list. Then he was asking me where I was from and what I was studying. But it was pretty funny.

I know some exchange student in my Bio Psych and the Korean Language class is only foreigners; but I think I am the only non-Korean in my Cell Bio class. Not that it really matters, but I just found it interesting.

Then this evening I did laundry. CJ House has a laundry room on the basement floor which is nice. I think I did it right. I separated my lights and darks and nothing came out of the dryer really small, so I'll count that as a success!

Sorry there are no pictures in this post. I can take a picture of the laundry room if you'd like. Any other picture request?

  1. Hi Kayra,
That is quite the time span between classes, at least you have Fridays off!

  2. Ha I love that he didn't know how to say your name, when you come back with your Korean name, we will struggle with pronouncing it too I guess.
Your schedule is pretty bad, but that will be great if you can get everything done in the day and have time to see the sights. At least since you get an early start all your days can be productive whether that means the afternoon is studying or shopping or sightseeing!
Also good job doing laundry, it's my favourite chore and I felt so proud when I learned it!

  3. I asked one of the KUBA buddies if they ever give foreigners Korean names and she said they sometimes do. Then she looked at me and said, "Hm, you look like a.. JiHae. That means wisdom". So you can call me JiHae (Gee-Hey, lol).

Can you fly over here and be my personal laundry assistant? :)
