Hello! I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter weekend!
Easter is definitely different here in Korea, mostly because (from what I found, at least) it was non-existant. It could be that it is just a holiday celebrated in the churches, but I did not notice any signs in the shop windows or "Easter chocolate" being sold in the stores. Restaurants and businesses were even open as usual on Easter Sunday. I think that is a good thing that it has not turned into a Hallmark holiday like in North America, but it was a different experience to not be surrounded by the usual 'holiday fluff'. I actually liked this because it allowed me to solely focus on real reason we celebrate and remember His sacrifice.
However, because it felt weird not to do anything for Easter, my roommate Connie and I decided to go out for a nice Easter supper. We didn't really have any sort of meal in mind, so we just walked around our area until we found a place we liked. We mostly had to rely on the signs posted out side the restaurants and only really considered the places that showed pictures of the food served there. We finally decided on a place that had a nice chicken dish.
 |
| This is the restaurant we went to. As you can see it was very small (besides these there were only two other tables). |
At this place you can notice that there are little stove burners. So they bring out the chicken dish (for 2 people to share) and then you have the burner on a little to keep it warm. Before the chicken the brought out the side dishes, as usual. No matter what sort of restaurant you go to in Korea, you will always get side dishes. Usually kimchi and some other vegetables.
 |
| Here are our side dishes. We have a soybean soup (top), kimchi (top right; in this picture it is almost already gone because it was so yummy), a fish thing (underneath the kimchi; neither of us eat fish so we didn't try this one), rice, and a "salad". |
I put salad in quotations because it is not like your typical salad. This salad consisted of:
- Lettuce (the only real 'salad' component)
- Yogurt (instead of dressing, I guess)
- Frosted Flakes
Yes, Frosted Flakes like the cereal. It was the strangest combination I have had here. It actually tasted pretty good, but only because it was really sweet.

Our chicken!!!!! :)

Besides the chicken, there was also onions, green onions, and deokkbokki. Deokkbokki is described by Koreans as a rice cake but I would say it is like a hybrid noodle made of rice thing (like gnocchi, maybe?). IT IS DELICIOUS. Usually it is sold as street food in a spicy sauce. They also seem to serve is alongside potatoes at the cafeteria with the meat.
After you eat most of the chicken and there is only sauce left, the waiter comes back and adds your rice into the mix. Our waiter gave us 'fried rice' but that meant there was also corn, seaweed, and cheese mixed it.
 |
| The second phase; rice mixture! |
 |
| Ooh... so nice and cheesy! |
This was actually so good. It almost tastes a bit like Mexican food to me (spicy sauce, corn, cheese....).
 |
| Korean soda. Tastes just like Sprite or 7-UP. |
And that was the meal! It was so delicious and filling. Plus it only cost us 5,500 won each ($5.00). It was not the kind of Easter meal I am used to, but it was yummy nonetheless.
Thanks for reading! Miss you guys! :)
Happy belated Easter! Too bad you aren't teaching Sunday School with me this year - the kids were extra cute for Easter!
ReplyDeleteHaha they are always cute.

You should just type in English lol
DeleteTyping in Korean was much more fun!!
DeleteDid you actually type it though or input an English phrase into a translating website?
DeleteI used my friend google translate...busted!
DeleteMuahaha! It is really difficult to get a good English to Korean translation from an online translator. Like for French or Italian it is okay, but translating from Korean to English makes no sense at all.
DeleteEx. When used in a sentence it translates 'Anam' (my area) to 'cancer'. :/
Hi Kayla - we missed you at our Easter dinner also, we had a lovely time and dinner/brunch at your place and we did talk about you and then watched all the pics your Dad took in Seoul, so it was sort of like you were there also
ReplyDeleteLove you and miss you.
I was definitely there in spirit! :) I'm glad you had a good Easter!
